Description

The Postgraduate Program in Bioscience Applied to Health of the Federal University of Alfenas (PPGB) is intended for the training of highly qualified personnel for research activities and for the exercise of university teaching. Enrollment in the program is open to candidates who have bachelor’s degree or higher level.

The program, which offers courses at the level of MSc and PhD, is divided in two concentration areas, in which all the ongoing projects belongs and enrolled Professors, Master´s Students, PhD´s Students, undergraduate students and collaborating researchers.

The PPGB was approved with CAPES grade 4 (from 1 up to 7). CAPES is a foundation within the Ministry of Education in Brazil whose central purpose is to coordinate efforts to improve the quality of Brazil’s faculty and staff in higher education through grant programs. The Masters Course began the operations in the 2011 and a Doctorate Course in the 2015, both in order to train skilled professionals to develop research and teaching in the proposed area. The Master´s Degree Course has an average duration of 24 months and the Doctoral Degree Course the average duration of 48 months.

Masters by Research (MSc): build on skills and knowledge from an undergraduate degree.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD): conduct research that leads to new knowledge or re-interprets existing ideas, theories and approaches.

 

Concentration Areas:

1- Pathophysiology

Study of endocrine disorders, thermoregulatory and behavioral generated by stress resulting from the activation of the immune system. Effects and mechanisms of herbal medicines in experimental models of disease. Study of the physiological changes in the cardiovascular and respiratory systems during exercise. Physical exercise and pregnancy. Proliferation, activation and cell differentiation in normal pathological or during pregnancy.

 

2 Neuroscience and Behavior

Morphological and quantitative study in the central and peripheral nervous system in animal models. Evaluation of the central nervous system in regulation of animal behavior and its association with the electrolyte balance and interaction with the cardiovascular system. Study of neurotransmitters involved in central mechanisms of behavior. Behavioral assessment in animals during normal pregnancy and after administration of plant extracts, drugs and infectious agents.
