Mission and Goals

Mission, Goals, and Values

Mission

Our mission is to train students to become qualified professionals that are able to work in education, research and extension projects related to the area of environmental sciences, environmental conservation and recovery, analysis of biological diversity at the genome-, population-, community- and ecosystem-levels, and application of technologies aiming at improving the environment. Additionally, we expect our students to be able to act in the entrepreneurial sectors related to the use and monitoring of renewable natural resources, within an interdisciplinary view of social and natural issues, with an emphasis on issues related to science and technology of aquatic and terrestrial environments, especially waste from wastewater, as well as applications aimed at the conservation of forest resources.

Goals

Our goals are to train and improve human resources with knowledge in the ecology of interactions across organisms, the environment and the human population, aiming to promote and consolidate knowledge in the environmental area, both from a basic and applied point of view, in both cases with a long-term focus on the study of human impacts on the environment. The main objective is to offer solutions to the problems caused by these impacts from different points of view, always in a multidisciplinary way.

The improvement of knowledge generated through the development of projects is of fundamental importance for achieving these goals, providing the transfer of knowledge and technology. The proposal presented for the Program encompasses the linking of cooperative actions between university/company/farmers, especially with the perspective of obtaining, developing and applying new methodologies to better understand, recover and conserve natural areas as well as subsidize the industrial sector in terms of treatment and destination of its waste.

Values

– Ethics: role of professionals in research and in their relationship with their peers;

– Scientific progress: contributing to the country’s scientific and technological growth;

– Inseparability: return to society the knowledge produced through information and extension actions.
