PAST CONTINUOUS

O que é?

O past continuous é uma forma verbal que indica ações contínuas que tiveram início no passado.

Exemplos:

It was raining yesterday.

I was cleaning my room last night.

She was eating bread.

 

Quando utilizar?

Existem algumas situações mais comuns ao usar esse tempo verbal, dentre elas, as principais são:

-Para expressar uma ação interrompida por outra:

Exemplo:

I was studying when my brother arrived.

-Para expressar ações que ocorreram ao mesmo tempo

Exemplo:

I was reading a book while my mom was watching TV

-Para descrever uma ação repetida ou habitual

Exemplo:

We were always playing video games

 

ESTRUTURA:

I/ He/ She/ It + was+ verbo+ ing

You/ We/ They + were + verbo + ing

 

Exemplo:

She was running this morning

They were running this morning

 

PAY ATTENTION

Para frases interrogativas, é importante lembrar de usar o verbo auxiliar no começo da frase:

Was + I/ He/ She/ It + verbo + ing

Exemplo:

Was he cooking yesterday?

Were + You/ We/ They + verbo + ing

Were you working last week?

Para frases negativas, é opcional usar ou não a contração do verbo auxiliar na forma negativa:

I/ He/ She/ It + was + not+  verbo + ing

You/ We/ They + were + not + verbo + ing

He was not/ wasn’t cleaning his room.
